Back to the Land, Back to Christ

On Saturday, June 3, 17 members of Holy Cross-Saint John visited Harmony Farm in Goshen, NY. We were grateful for this day of retreat from the busy city, a day to enjoy the company of trees, flowers, birds, and bees. Harmony Farm is an organic farm run by two Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt. Sister Didi Madden guided us into a morning of restful communion with the environment, as we let the wind, the water, and the plants beckon us. Instead of us deciding where to walk around the farm, God's spirit speaking through nature led each of us forward. After a healthy vegetarian lunch, we did some light work in the crop rows and in the greenhouse. We also hiked to the highest point on the farm, where, decades ago, Dominican novices planted two lines of pine trees and built a grotto for Our Lady of Lourdes. Approaching the grotto down the shady lane formed by the tall, sturdy pines gave us the feeling of being in an outdoor cathedral.
